The people behind Scruffy Markets
Built by traders who like solving hard problems.
I’m Danny Cutts, an entrepreneur, futures trader and lifelong problem-solver based on the south coast of England.

Over the years, I’ve built and run businesses across property, digital publishing, online communities, beekeeping, technology and financial markets. I’ve spent more than two decades creating and developing online businesses, building communities, launching new ideas and finding ways to turn opportunities into practical, working businesses.
Alongside my business interests, I’ve spent several years actively day trading the futures markets. Trading has become a significant part of what I do, with a strong focus on understanding market behaviour, developing strategies, managing risk and continually looking for ways to improve consistency and decision-making.
That interest in trading also led to a joint venture developing trading software, automation and analytical tools. Together, we’ve worked on systems covering strategy testing, backtesting, trade analysis, risk management and automated trading, as well as tools designed to help traders better understand their own performance.
I’ve always enjoyed taking an idea and figuring out how to turn it into something useful. That has led me into everything from building businesses and developing websites to property renovation, construction projects, software development and trading technology.
I’m not someone who particularly enjoys doing things simply because “that’s how they’ve always been done.” If there’s a better, quicker or smarter way of doing something, I’ll usually end up trying to find it.
Away from business and trading, I’m a dad, beekeeper, motorcyclist and serial DIY project starter. I enjoy practical projects, learning how things work and generally having a go at things myself — usually with another idea or project already waiting in the background.
Trader · Product designer · Developer
Meet James Hanson.
I’m James Hanson, a futures trader, product designer and software developer based on the south coast of England.
- 10 years
- trading futures markets
- 20+ years
- corporate sound engineering
- Lead developer
- Scruffy Markets and Scruffy Charts
My professional background spans technology, product development and corporate sound engineering. I spent five years as CTO, lead product designer and project manager at TRS Technology, where I helped develop and launch some of the earliest digital-signage software to reach the market. Being among the first to turn an emerging idea into a commercial product remains one of the achievements I’m most proud of.
Alongside this, I have more than 20 years’ experience as a corporate sound engineer, working on projects and events for organisations including Clinique, Tom Ford, London Fashion Week and the Brit Awards. That environment taught me the importance of preparation, attention to detail and remaining calm when there is little room for error.
My interest in financial markets began at the age of eight, when my dad helped me make my first investments. I was hooked after one of those early holdings became the subject of a buyout, sending the share price from £2.55 to £10 overnight. Several years later, I began day trading stocks before moving into the NQ and MNQ futures markets.
I now have ten years’ experience trading futures through both proprietary and private accounts. Becoming consistently profitable came down to disciplined risk management, following a defined plan and putting in enough repetition for good decisions to become instinctive.
What continues to attract me to trading is that every day presents a new challenge—and usually an opportunity to learn something more about yourself.
I met Danny three years ago, and it wasn’t long before a conversation about day trading turned into a few lessons and his first Topstep Combine. Today, we are partners in Scruffy Markets. I lead development of Scruffy Markets and Scruffy Charts, while Danny leads development of the algorithmic trading platform. Together, we are building practical tools for market analysis, strategy development and trading performance.
I approach both trading and product development from the top down. Before beginning a project, I want to understand the bigger picture and establish a clear path forward. That makes it easier to manage priorities, set realistic timeframes and prevent scope from drifting. I believe that if something is worth doing, it is worth seeing through properly—with discipline, persistence and attention to detail.
Away from the markets and software development, I enjoy sailing, live music, speciality coffee and technology.
